STEEL ENGRAVING – “WEAVING THE MAY CORONET” from the painting by L. Pohle, engraved by Thomas Langer, published in 1885. This engraving is in very good condition. The actual engraving measures 8 ½” x 6 3/8”, and is matted to 11” x 14” for easy framing.
Tennyson’s young woman, who told her mother that she intended to be Queen of the May, and prepared herself accordingly, may or may not have suggested the picture, “Weaving the May Coronet.” If it did, English art, which likes so much a literary story in a painting, and has, at the same time, a profound affection for genre work, will find in this specimen much to commend itself. German art also, as represented by such men as Meyer von Bremen and the leading lights of the Dusseldorf school, may claim this sort of subject with equal propriety. Mr. Pohle has not yet acquired a wide reputation on this side of the Atlantic, although this work is in advance of nine tenths of the similar works that are produced in the German studios, so far as facile apprehension of the illustrative possibilities of pretty little every-day incidents, of more or less pathetic character, is concerned. Certainly, if anybody took this picture and used it as a frontispiece to Mr. Tennyson’s “Queen of the May,” little fault could be found with him. The damsel is fair to look upon, has an amiable disposition, well-rounded arms, and, one would say, a perfect passion for daisies. She does not seem to be quite near enough to the water to see her loveliness mirrored; perhaps, as soon as she gets her head-wreath arranged, she will change her position, so as to accomplish that desirable result.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE
Antique prints, engravings, and lithographs are printing processes which use steel, copper, stone or wood blocks or plates to produce a picture on paper.
Most antique prints and engravings, which are seen on the internet today, are bookplates. Because they are pages from a book, there are multiple copies in existence. This does not, however, mean that they are "reproductions" that have been printed recently. Because they were, at some point, part of books, some have been preserved in excellent condition, while others show signs of age, as yellow spots or darkness on the edge of the page from being handled.
Engravings, lithographs, ect. are high quality pieces of art, as it took a highly trained artist many hours of work to produce one. Although there may be multiple copies still in existence, the date of the item should be stated in the auction, thus giving the buyer an idea of it's age.
