STEEL ENGRAVING – “IN THE GLEN” from the sketch by Sir Edwin Landseer, engraved by C.G. Lewis, printed in 1876. This engraving is in very good condition. The engraving measures 6 ¾” x 8 ¾”, and is matted to 11” x 14” for easy framing.
Sir Edwin Landseer was born in London in 1802, and when a mere child, gave token of his ability as an animal painter. He began to exhibit when little more than fourteen years of age, and swiftly rose to the highest rank in his profession. This specimen of the deer in a mountain glen, especially of the buck and the doe, whose ears and heads show that they are on the alert at some unusual noise near by, is both characteristic and inimitable. The animals that he most liked to paint were dogs and deer, which he has given to the world under varied conditions of atmosphere and temper – sometimes as mourning the death of their master, and at other times as displaying their affinity for what is comical.
Sir Edwin inherited his talent from his father, who was a well-known engraver, and gave him his first lessons in drawing. Some sketches that he made when he was about eight years of age are preserved in British Museums.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE
Antique prints, engravings, and lithographs are printing processes, which use steel, copper, stone or wood blocks or plates to produce a picture on paper.
Most antique prints and engravings, which are seen on the internet today, are bookplates. Because they are pages from a book, there are multiple copies in existence. This does not, however, mean that they are "reproductions" that have been printed recently. Because they were, at some point, part of books, some have been preserved in excellent condition, while others show signs of age, as yellow spots or darkness on the edge of the page from being handled.
Engravings, and lithographs are high quality pieces of art, as it took a highly trained artist many hours of work to produce one. Although there may be multiple copies still in existence, the date of the item should be stated, thus giving the buyer an idea of its age.
