Owner`s Statement
J&I ARTS began more than 25 years ago with a mission of bringing works of art off the shelves and out of the closets and selling them to those who would have an appreciation for them. It is said that ‘beauty is in the eyes of the beholder,’ but if engravings and literature are left to collect dust in a closet or on a bookshelf, then nobody has the opportunity of enjoying it. We have collected a very large inventory of engravings, literature, and other gifts, and now offer them at reasonable prices for your enjoyment.

EVERY SATURDAY - FEBRUARY 11, 1871 THE RED CROSS $35.00

This item is the February 11, 1871 issue of EVERY SATURDAY a weekly newspaper that was published in Boston by James Osgood and Company.  It was similar to the New York newspapers Harper's Weekly, and Frank Leslie, all of which were highly illustrated with wood engravings.  Every Saturday is a rare newspaper, because it had a much smaller circulation.  Earlier Boston newspapers, Gleason's Pictorial which later became Ballou's Pictorial were also similar in content, in that they provided historical news of current events, and art and literature.  In 1871 Every Saturday was expanded from a 16 page newspaper, which was common at that time, to a 24 page newspaper, thus providing for more articles and additional engravings. This issue is in very good condition, with only a few nicks and a few age spots, but nothing serious.  The pages are very clean and bright for a publication of this age.  Additional pictures are available upon request, please send your e-mail address.

ARTICLES:

GENERAL ROBERT C. SCHENCK, OUR NEW MINISTER TO ENGLAND.  Cover illustration with extensive biographical article. (See Cover Portrait)

THE REDISTRIBUTION OF POLITICAL POWER. - The redistribution of political power is between Judiciary Committee of the House of Representative and the Committee on the Census.

THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES a double page engraving of the Senate Chamber in the Capitol at Washington, with the Senators in their seats and the Vice-President presiding.  The picture is drawn from careful study, and the faces of the Senators brought into prominence are rendered as truthfully from photographs as the limits of such an engraving allow. (See picture)

THE RED CROSS, 1870.  This sketch represents an English lady, one of the numerous band of the “Red Cross” sisterhood, who, during the recent campaigns, have devoted themselves to ministering to the sufferings of the sick and wounded victims of war. (See picure)

THE TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN, AS SEEN FROM GIBRALTAR THROUGH THE TELESCOPE.  Men of science hoped at the Eclipse of 1870 to determine the nature of the corona, including beams and streamers; but the clearest possible sky was indispensable for the proper use of so delicate an instrument as the polariscope, and this condition was not accorded at Gibraltar even for a second.  (See Picture)

A CANNON-SHOT engraved from the painting by G. Durand, in the London Exhibition, which is accompanied by a poem by the same name.  (See Picture)

THE MARQUIS DE VILLEMER. - by George Sand.

MARSHAL PRIM – The equestrian portrait of General Prim was engraved from the picture painted at Madrid by Regnault.  The painting was sent to the Paris Exhibition, where it achieved a great success.  (See Picture)

WILL THE ICE BEAR? A very proper question to ask in this variable climate, and one which, if solved satisfactorily, would save many melancholy accidents.  But this dainty lady, who is just tapping the slippery surface with her foot, is scarcely acting in a manner which will properly decide the weighty problem. (see picture)

HERE AND THERE. - An anonymous poem.

A DOG AND CAT BUTCHERS AT PARIS.  The indications are that Paris will not be able to hold out much longer.  With the entry of the Prussians into the French capital there will be an end to such scenes as that illustrated in the sketch – the dog and cat butcher established in the St. Germain Market.

TOWN-TALK. - CHARLES FECHTER.

MANIAS OF BUSINESS-MEN. - Balzac, the renowned French romancer, is specially great in the analysis of “manias,” and the delineation of monomaniacs.

THINGS. - A STORY . -by John Paul.

THE COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN RELATIONS OF THE SENATE IN SESSION; The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs is in some respects the most important and influential committee of Congress.  Pictured are Senators Sumner of Massachusetts, Cameron of Pennsylvania, Harlan of Iowa, Morton of Indiana, Patterson of New Hampshire, Schurz of Missouri, and Casserly of California.

CALLING A SENATOR.  The curious stranger visiting Washington considers that he has an indisputable claim on the time of the senator whom he has helped to place in so high a position.  The senator recognizes this claim to a certain extent, for it would be unwise policy for him to slight the humblest of his constituents.

ON THE WAY TO THE CUPOLA.  From the Washington Capitol the view is magnificent, a panorama embracing the Virginia woodlands, the Potomac, and a hundred points of historic interest.

AT THE MORGANS’ - A STORY.

“COASTING” AT OMAHA.” Engraved from the painting by A. Boyd Houghton – Children sledding in the winter snow in Omaha.
