Owner`s Statement
J&I ARTS began more than 25 years ago with a mission of bringing works of art off the shelves and out of the closets and selling them to those who would have an appreciation for them. It is said that ‘beauty is in the eyes of the beholder,’ but if engravings and literature are left to collect dust in a closet or on a bookshelf, then nobody has the opportunity of enjoying it. We have collected a very large inventory of engravings, literature, and other gifts, and now offer them at reasonable prices for your enjoyment.

EVERY SATURDAY - JAN. 29, 1870 HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW $30.00

This item is the January 29, 1870 issue of EVERY SATURDAY a weekly newspaper that was published in Boston by James Osgood and Company.  It was similar to the New York newspapers Harper's Weekly, and Frank Leslie, all of which were highly illustrated with wood engravings.  Every Saturday is a rare newspaper, because it had a much smaller circulation.  Earlier Boston newspapers, Gleason's Pictorial, which later became Ballou's Pictorial were also similar in content, in that they provided historical news of current events, and art and literature.  This issue is in very good condition the pages are very clean and bright for a publication of this age.  I have rarely seen newspapers, of this age, in such good condition.  Additional pictures are available upon request please send your e-mail address.

ARTICLES:

HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW – Longfellow, one of the most popular poets in the 1870’s was born in Portland, Maine and attended Bowdoin College, where he graduated in 1825.  The article continues his biography, and mentions many of his more famous poems.  The cover of this issue is engraved with a portrait of Longfellow. (See cover portrait)

THE COMPLAINT OF MONA LISA – A lengthy poem by Swinburne

THE VICEROY OF EGYPT – The recent inauguration of the Suez Canal, with the consequent visits of many distinguished Europeans, having brought the Egyptian Viceroy, Ismail Pasha, again into the foreground, it may be of interest to learn something of his personage.

CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL – The ward for children at the London Hospital still remains one of Queen Victoria’s favorite charities.  A full-page engraving is presented depicting ladies distributing toys among the patients.  The toys are said to be as much of a comfort as the drugs that are administered.

THE OLD CARDINAL’S RETREAT – A fictional story

ECHOES – A poem by T. Ashe

A PARISIAN GENIUS OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY – The story of Father Pere Chapellier.

THE CITY OF BOOKS – The story of Leipsic, Germany and the invention of printing.

OFFENBACH’S OPERAS – There are two new operas by Offenbach, “La Princesse de Trebisonde,” and “Les Brigands”.  The article describes the operas.

THE LOST CHILD – A full-page engraving depicting a London street scene, where a child who has lost her way, is surrounded by adults attempting to provide assistance. (See picture)

THE BAZAR AT CAIRO – A full-page engraving depicting two English girls chaffering with the old knick-knack merchant.  Their Paris-cut coats and walking dresses seem almost out of place in the eastern street-life. (See picture)

CLIMBING IN SEARCH OF THE SKY – A story of travels by Professor Tyndall

MR. TENNYSON’S NEW VOLUME – A critical review of Alfred Tennyson’s book about King Arthur.

THE UGLIFYING PROCESS – A good deal is written and said from time to time on the connection between dress and art; and all those who lament the unnecessary ugliness with which fashion invests often in every day life.

LONG ENGAGEMENTS – If you should happen to discuss with elderly and experienced ladies the subject of long engagements, you will find that they will shake their heads steadily and at once pronounce an unequivocal verdict of disapprobation.
