A MAN WANTED - Machine domination in politics was never more strongly illustrated than in the present situation of the Democratic Party in State of New York. In Buffalo and elsewhere the methods by which Sheehan and his gang usurped control of the city police in order that it might be made the instrument for the perpetuation of political villanies, have awakened the intensest indignation.
THE NAVAL ACADEMY - The last fortnight has been a busy and interesting season at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. That is the serious business to the cadets themselves and to the professors and instructors, at the end of the school year.
INTERNATIONAL YACHTING - Things don't look quite as bright as they did for Mr. Royal Phelps Carroll. It is useless to conceal the fact that the last news from England has made experienced American yachtsmen breathe short. The English have made serious advances in the design of their new yacht Calluna.
THE PENSION BUSINESS - The extensive pension frauds which have recently been brought to light in Virginia show how easy it is to foist fraudulent names upon the pension-rolls, and suggest that a thorough and painstaking investigation might discover that many hundreds, if not thousands, of those who are now enjoying the nation's bounty have no just claim whatever to it.
YOUNG REPUBLICANS IN ACTION – The Republican Press has called for younger men to be allowed to hold important positions. Now Mr. W.W. Tracy has been elected the new president of the National League, a political group, at the age of thirty-one.
THE CRUISER “NEW YORK’S” TRIUMPH – The New York, on her trial trip, set a new record of more than twenty-one knots of sustained speed for four hours. A full-page illustration of the ship is presented. (See picture)
CIVIL-SERVICE REFORM - The friends of civil-service reform are beginning to suspect that the sympathy of the President with their efforts is by no means genuine as had supposed.

AUSTRALIAN NABKING. – Australia’s is such a far-away country that few people know much of its resources and industries.

Now, after a successful stage career, she has published novels with the help of Charles MacDonald. Portraits of Miss Edwards and Mr. MacDonald are presented.

SENIOR SOCIETY ELECTIONS AT YALE - That part of the Yale campus which lies between the end of North and Durfee, where stands the present substitute for the old fence, is the scene, on the afternoon of the fifth Thursday before Commencement day, of a ceremony unique and interesting. The scene is repeated till fifteen men each, from “Scroll and Key,” “Skull and Bones,” and “Wolf’s Head,” have appeared upon the campus and elected their successors.

A BOX OF SWEETMEATS - In this orderly world there is a sufficient reason for everything, and no lasting pre-eminence is ever achieved quite by chance. Before a manufacturer in any line of trade can get for his product such a reputation that it ranks above all others of like kind, that manufacturer must have demonstrated the merits of his product continuously for years.
THE VON ROTTENBURG-PHELPS WEDDING - The wedding of Dr. Franz von Rottenburg and Miss. Marian Phelps, daughter of Hon. William Walter Phelps, Minister to Germany, which took place, on June 1st, at the American Legation in Berlin, was an event of unusual interest.
AT THE WORLD’S FAIR – Many difficulties have occurred at the outset of the Columbian Exposition, from unfinished buildings, to concessions for photographers, and now the management has kicked up a rumpus with the famous conductor Mr. Theodore Thomas concerning the music.

THE CONQUEROR OF DAHOMEY - The advent of a victorious soldier, a "man on horseback," is a matter of serious concern to the conservative republican government of France. The meteoric career of General Boulanger demonstrated that the French people are just as ready as they were in the times of Napoleon to apotheosize the military hero of the day. Now, General Dodds has come back to France from the conquest of Dahomey.
