Owner`s Statement
J&I ARTS began more than 25 years ago with a mission of bringing works of art off the shelves and out of the closets and selling them to those who would have an appreciation for them. It is said that ‘beauty is in the eyes of the beholder,’ but if engravings and literature are left to collect dust in a closet or on a bookshelf, then nobody has the opportunity of enjoying it. We have collected a very large inventory of engravings, literature, and other gifts, and now offer them at reasonable prices for your enjoyment.

GLEASON'S PICTORIAL SEPT. 10, 1853 CRYSTAL PALACE, NY $25.00

This is the September 10, 1853 issue of GLEASON'S PICTORIAL newspaper, which in later years went by the name of Ballou's pictorial.  It is much like the more popular newspapers of the time, Harper's Weekly, and Frank Leslie.  All of these newspapers were highly illustrated with wood engravings. It is in very good condition, the pages are flat, with only minor spotting from being handled over the years. As you can see from the list of articles below it gives a good insight into the issues and life of that time, along with some very nice literary articles and poems. Additional pictures available upon request, please send your e-mail address.

ARTICLES:

GOV. CLIFFORD AND AIDS - The two engravings provided with this article represent: Gov. Clifford and aids, as they appeared in full dress uniform at the late encampment in review of the First Division of Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, at North Abington, MA. (See pictures)

THE INTERIOR OF AFRICA – Africa is almost a terra incognita.  We know very little about the vast continent which lies almost wholly within the tropics, and of which the greater part seems shut up as effectually against the advances of civilization as if it were upon another planet.

MY SPIRIT BRIDE – A poem by Joseph Butler.

THE BURGOMASTER’S POCKET – A story by Dr. Jerome V. C. Smith

SONG – A poem by J. F. Brune

SHEPHERDS IN JUDEA – Shortly after leaving the city we met several flocks of sheep, preceded by their shepherds, walking slowly toward Jerusalem, nad at once the full force of all the beautiful imagery, and the many touching similes derived from such scenes and association, and so often alluded to in Scripture, came vividly before me.

BIRDS OF PASSAGE - A poem by George Coomer

THE COLPORTEUR – A story by T. S. Arthur.

EDITORIAL MELANGE - The commerce of San Francisco with all the American and Asiatic ports is rapidly increasing.
