This is the September 25, 1858 issue of HARPER’S WEEKLY newspaper. Harper’s was one of the most successful newspapers of the time. Other publishers in the late 1800’s included Frank Leslie, in New York, and Gleason’s and Ballou’s Pictorial, and Every Saturday in Boston. All of these publications were highly illustrated with wood engravings. This issue is in very good condition, except for some minor age spots at the edge of the pages from being handled, over the years. This issue gives good insight into life in the 1800’s, with articles on politics, literature, and art. Additional pictures are available upon request please send your e-mail address.
ARTICLES:
REV. SAMUAL L. PRIME, D.D. – A biographical article with an engraved portrait. Mr. Prime is well known for his long and successful editorship of the New York Observer. He also published general works of literature from time to time. A graduate of Williams College, he studied theology at Princeton. Dr. prime is eminently conservative, and has little faith in those more violent reformers, who, like Mohammed, present their creed in one hand and the sword of vituperation in the other, and force a choice. (See cover page)
THE CONVENTION – In previous articles we have spoken of the effects produced by the Constitution of 1846 upon the Central Powers of the State of New York, and upon the Judiciary. Let us now look a little at the Administration of the Law.
MARTIAL LAW IN RICHMOND COUNTY – Whenever party feeling runs high, an unscrupulous governor may overawe his opponents by declaring them in a state of insurrection, and quartering troops on them. Let no one say these hypotheses are far-fetched; the experience of the past two years shows that no limits can be set to the insanity of political partisanship.
THE END OF THE ATRONOMICAL QUARREL – We refer to the quarrel, which has arisen between the Trustees of the Dudley Observatory, of Albany, New York, and the astronomers of that institution. Mr. Pierce, Bache, and Henry have forced Dr. Gould on the authorities of the observatory, to retain control of that establishment in defiance of the Trustees.
THE ARMY OF OCCUPATION ON STATEN ISLAND – After the burning of the quarantine hospital, the Governor has proclaimed martial law. Two engravings are presented with this article – “The army of occupation on Staten Island, The Camp”; and “The Soldiers’ Tents”.
THE COMET – The advent of the comet, which is at present visible to the naked eye in the northern heavens, was first made known by Prof. Donati, of Florence, on the 3rd of June. A map of the “Course of the Comet Through the Stars” is presented.
PAUL MORPHY THE CHESS CHAMPION – This remarkable chess genius has attracted the attention of the chess world through his triumph in England. Not yet twenty years old, he is a native of the City of New Orleans. An extensive article is presented of his style of play and the championship game.
THE SON OF FRANCE – The son of Napoleon the Third is presented to the world. An engraved portrait the French Imperial Prince is presented with this article.
