Owner`s Statement
J&I ARTS began more than 25 years ago with a mission of bringing works of art off the shelves and out of the closets and selling them to those who would have an appreciation for them. It is said that ‘beauty is in the eyes of the beholder,’ but if engravings and literature are left to collect dust in a closet or on a bookshelf, then nobody has the opportunity of enjoying it. We have collected a very large inventory of engravings, literature, and other gifts, and now offer them at reasonable prices for your enjoyment.

HARPER'S WEEKLY JUNE 21, 1862 GENERAL POPE IN CORNITH $20.00

This is the June 21, 1862 issue of HARPER'S WEEKLY newspaper. Harper's was one of the most successful newspapers of the time. Other publishers in the late 1800's included Frank Leslie, in New York, and Gleason's and Ballou's Pictorial, and Every Saturday in Boston.  All of these publications were highly illustrated with wood engravings.  This issue is in good condition for a newspaper of this age, except it contains some age spots that are common among the issues during Civil War, as they were highly read. Additional pictures are available upon request.  Please include your e-mail address.

REOPENING OF THE MISSISSIPPI. – The great work of suppressing the rebellion is in effect achieved.  The Union troops take control of the river from the Southwest Pass to St. Louis.  This divides the rebel States, shutting off Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas.

THE MEXICAN QUESTIONS:  The Mexican Government, which has been influenced by the Mexican Church, has ruled with the worse kind of anarchy and the country has long been in disorder.  Great Britain, France, and Spain have agreed to intervene without the help of the United States in order to restore peace to the country.

FORECASTING the future events of the Civil War.

M’CLELLAN:  The Union forces commanded by M’Clellan have succeeded at Manassas, and Yorktown.  Yet the rebels have engaged in four severe battles – Williamsburg, West Point, Hanover Court House, and Fairoaks.

IMPORTANT FOR THE FUTURE:  The new military Governor of North Carolina, Mr. Stanley, has chose to uphold a state law, which prohibits slaves from attending school, and has therefore closed all black schools.  As he was sent to uphold the laws of the United States, he should annul the State Law as it is in conflict with the Federal Law.

“CONSERVATISM.”  Peace at any price, whether of civil order, of national existence, of human rights, of individual honor, or of common decency, is the heart’s prayer of this “Conservatism”.

TRUTH VERSUS TWADDLE:  There is a lively piece of twaddle afloat.  It is the ineffably and silly assertion that this is a nation of white men, or a white man’s government.

A HINT TO THE IMPATIENT:  The misunderstandings of the hardships of war.

A POOR BROTHER OF SAINT CROSS – A story.

THE ARMY OF THE MISSISSIPPI:  We are enabled to give in this number, three pages of illustrations, of the Army of the Mississippi from sketches by our special artists, Messrs. Davis and Simplot.
