Owner`s Statement
J&I ARTS began more than 25 years ago with a mission of bringing works of art off the shelves and out of the closets and selling them to those who would have an appreciation for them. It is said that ‘beauty is in the eyes of the beholder,’ but if engravings and literature are left to collect dust in a closet or on a bookshelf, then nobody has the opportunity of enjoying it. We have collected a very large inventory of engravings, literature, and other gifts, and now offer them at reasonable prices for your enjoyment.

HARPER'S WEEKLY FEB 10, 1872 DANGERS ON THE RAILWAYS $25.00

This is the February 10, 1872 issue of HARPER’S WEEKLY newspaper.  Harper’s was one of the most successful newspapers of the time.  Other publishers in the late 1800’s included Frank Leslie, in New York, and Gleason’s and Ballou’s Pictorial, and Every Saturday in Boston.  All of these publications were highly illustrated with wood engravings.  This issue is in very good condition the pages are flat and clean.  This issue gives good insight into life in the 1800’s, with articles on politics, literature, and art.  Additional pictures are available upon request.  Please include your e-mail address.

ARTICLES:

DANGER AHEAD – While a railway train thunders down the track, at its accustomed rate of speed, it comes suddenly upon a curve so sharply drawn that nothing can be seen of the track ahead.  Sometimes a dreadful event has occurred just beyond the range of vision, and in this case the engineers are warned and they engage in a mighty effort to stop the train. An engraving drawn by W.L. Sheppard illustrates this article. (See picture)

THE CLOUD CONFINES – A poem by Dante Gabriel Rossetti

THE OLD TUNE – As the republicans sound the keynote speech of the beginning of the campaign for Presidential elections, Senator Thurman, of Ohio, a Democratic leader says that the Republicans are sounding the same old speeches again, that date back to the end of the Civil War.

THE NATIONAL REPUBLICAN CONVENTION – As the Republicans announce their National Convention, by custom, for a time and place of meeting, Horace Greeley, the New York member of National Committee, is not in favor of President Grant and those in power, that were party to the rebellion (The Civil War).

THE NEW YORK INVESTIGATION – As the New York Custom-house is being investigated for corruption, there have been the usual allegations by the Administration, the Anti-Administration and the Democrats.

THE JAPANESE EMBASSY – The most remarkable incident of the moment in this country is the arrival and the speeches of the Japanese Ambassadors, who are not in favor of the American view of the Japanese.

CONGRESS AND REFORM – In 1871 the Republicans called for the reform of the Civil Service, and now that the reforms have passed, some of the most staunch opponents, are Republicans.

A NEW YORK POLITICIAN’S RECEPTION – On New Years day the politicians open their homes to callers of nearly every grade of life.  Some of the lowest of ruffians are welcomed in the same manner, as would be the clergyman of the parish.  An engraving illustrating a similar scene is presented from a drawing by W.J. Hennessey.

THE HON. S.S. COX – After a long career of public service Mr. Cox moved to New York, and published a book entitled “Eight Years in Congress.”  The book was dedicated to his constituents in Ohio.  An engraved portrait of Mr. Cox is presented.

POOR MISS FINCH – A fictional story by Wilkie Collins

PARTING WITH THE WEDDING RING – A touching engraving is presented, from a sketch by M. Woolf, which depicts a poor woman who does not belong to the class of those who bring wretchedness upon themselves by their misconduct.  Her life is above reproach, and that she now suffers is no fault of hers.  Her husband is dead, and little by little their wealth has gone to pay for doctors and other necessities of life.

GOVERNOR NOYES, OF OHIO – An engraved portrait of the newly elected Governor, is accompanied by a biographic article.

SNOW-BOUND ON THE CENTRAL PACIFIC RAILROAD – Two engravings “The Snow-Sheds Covered With Snow,” and “The Snow-Plow Clearing The Way” illustrate the severe winter which has overtaken the territories from Colorado to Wyoming, and the western limits of Kansas and Nebraska.  The article describes the severity and difficulties created by the storms.

MIDDLE MARCH, a study of provincial life – by George Eliot

CINCINNATUS – A full-page engraving by the political satirist Thomas Nast, depicting Horace Greeley the farmer receiving the nomination for President from Horace Greeley the editor. (See picture)

THE MONITORS AT LEAGUE ISLAND – During the Civil War, iron-clad ships of war were invented.  In 1872 there were fifty-four iron-clad monitors in the service of the United States.  Some of these ships are stationed at New Orleans, and other convenient points, and the remaining are on the Delaware River, off League Island.  Five of these are being commissioned for service in Cuban waters.  Two engravings are presented with this article: “Monitor Harbor, at League Island, Pennsylvania,” and “Removing Sea-going Monitors from their Anchorage in the Delaware, Off League Island.” (See picture)

TRINITY CHURCHYARD – A full-page engraving, drawn by Sol Eytinge, illustrates the commentary, which describes this cemetery, in the midst of New York City. (see picture)
