This is the May 23, 1857 issue of THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS newspaper. This newspaper contains more than twice as many pages as it's American counterpart HARPER'S WEEKLY, and has many more illustration. This issue is in very good condition, the pages are very clean and white, except for a few minor age spots. The pages are flat, with no tears. As can be seen from the list of articles and illustrations this publication contains many historical stories of the time, and reports of the issues that faced the people of Great Britain at the time.

GREAT BOAT RACE FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE THAMES AND L400 - The race and the championship of the Thames, took place between Henry Kelly, of Fulham, and the defending champion James Messenger of Teddington. Mr. Kelly finished the distance in twenty- three minutes and a quarter, beating Messenger by a minute. An engraving of the race depicting the two boats and spectators is published with this article. THE FIRST YACHT MATCH OF THE SEASON, ISLE OF WIGHT - The season commenced with great spirit at Ryde, when the long-talked-of match round the Isle of Weight came off between the Shadow cutter 52 tons, Sir Gilbert Estate, and the Coquette schooner, 47 tons, S. Pigott, ESQ. (See picture)

THE CAPTURE OF MOHAMMERAH – A fierce battle between the English and Persian forces took place on the Euphrates River at the town of Mohammerah. A detailed description of the battle with illustrations of the aftermath is presented.
MUTINY OF NATIVE TROOPS IN INDIA - The Bengal papers are filled with the particulars of the mutiny of the 19th Regiment Native Infantry, which has ended in the disbandment of that corps, and the spread of disaffection to the 34th Regiment Native Infantry.
EXHIBITION OF THE ROYAL ACADEMY - Mr. Wallis contributes nothing of such enchaining interest, or so exquisite in the execution, as his “Death of Chatterton”; but his present works show more various powers.
