This natural rock formation has long been a symbol for the State of New Hampshire. Until recent years, it could be seen atop Crawford Notch, where US Route 302 now crosses the through the White Mountains. Unfortunately frost and snow contributed to its destruction, and this natural wonder no longer exists. It had represented New Hampshire for so long that in 2000 a picture of it was selected to be on the reverse of the 50 State Quarter that represents that state. As pictures of The Old Man In The Mountain are all that remain of this natural wonder, they have become very collectible.
Although Charles Sawyer is known to have lived and worked in Farmington, Maine, he moved to Concord New Hampshire in the early 1920’s. From there, he made excursions into the White Mountains and was able to capture the scenic beauty and natural geologic phenomenon of the area. Many of his pictures are of mountains and lakes or rivers; or of a more artist nature of flowers and trees taken at a point in the year when they were in full bloom, when the colors of the scene were at there best. His travels took him to all of the New England States and New York, and in the 1920’s he traveled to California twice, where he visited Yosemite and the surrounding areas.
This is a rare black and white photograph by Charles Sawyer of Concord, New Hampshire. This photograph has never been framed. It was stored in an attic for many years after the Sawyer Studio closed. The picture has been preserved in excellent condition. The picture measures 5 3/4” x 3 3/4”, on a 10” x 8”mat. Sawyer's photographs are highly collectible, and compare in quality to Wallace Nutting prints.
